On Thursday, February 21, after a unanimous vote by the Oakland Police
Commission, they fired Oakland Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick without cause.
The Police Commission which consist of Oakland civilians made the decision
with the required approval of Mayor Libby Schaaf. Mayor Schaaf hired
Kirkpatrick in February of 2017 and became the first female police chief
in Oakland's history. In a statement made, Mayor Libby Schaaf stated, "My
decision yesterday was extremely personal difficult for me". She also noted
that leaders come and go, that she too will also be leaving her post as Mayor
someday in the future. Kirkpatrick was Oakland's fourth chief in a span of seven
months and inherited a police department that continued to see crime increase
in every category last year. Chairman of the Oakland Police Commission
Regina Jackson made the motion to dismiss the chief during the closed-session
meeting. If Kirkpatrick signs her no-cause termination agreement, whe will be
offered about $270,000.
