Police Ambushed In French Quarter Leaving One Police Officer In Serious Condition

New Orleans Police Officers were ambushed on Friday at the corner of Royal Street and Saint
Philip Street in the French Quarter. NOPD arrested and charged Donnell Linwood Hassell, 44,
of Augusta, Georgia with two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a poilce officer.
This all started when a pedicab
riden by Hassell on Saint Philip
Street approached the Royal Street
intersection around 4:30 P.M.

Fawkes Fine Art shows the ambush
unfolding.
In the footage, officers in the
police SUV exit their vehicle and
began to chase after Hassell. Hassell
did injury one of the officers in the
SUV.

NOPD has identified the injured officer as Trevor Abney who was struck in the left cheek below
his eye by shattered glass from the SUV's window. Abney, 31, was driving with NOPD officer
Brooke Duncan IV. Duncan substained a cut on her arm by glass shards from the shattered window.
Abney was taken to a local hospital for treatment where he has been listed in stable but critical
condition.
As seen in the video, neither officer appeared to have time to return fire before Hassell ran
from the scene.
After a short foot chase, Hassell was arrested at the intersection of Saint Peter and Decatur. After
being arrested, he was taken to the hospital to be evaluated after experiencing a medical episode
during his arrest.
A family member tell OnlineCityGuides.com that Hassell was a weapons specialist in the military
and did a number of tours in Iraq. "He was given a honorable discharge due to P.T.S.D." says Sean
Hassell.
As of right now, their has been no motive why Hassell shot at the officers.
